The IFP calls on the Department of Health in
Kwa-Zulu Natal to immediately stop the closing down of Pongolo
Hospital in northern Kwa-Zulu Natal. The people of Pongolo and
surrounding areas have a constitutional right to healthcare in
their own area and do not have the means to travel to other
areas for medical treatment.
IFP Spokesperson on Health, Mrs. Hilda Msweli
MP said, "It is shocking to discover that the Department of
Health in Kwa-Zulu Natal is planning to close down such an
essential medical services institution without providing
alternatives to Pongolo residents and Pongolo Hospital staff.
People's lives are at greater risk now because of this
In addition to this pending medical treatment
crisis in the area, there will also be a crisis of unemployment
with many of the Pongolo hospital staff being retrenched.
We therefore call upon the Department to immediately
allocate Pongolo hospital the R3.8 million subsidy that it
requires in order to sustain its running costs.
The IFP also calls on the Minister of Health,
Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi to intervene in this situation before the
citizens of Pongola suffer due to this closing.
