SAPS Recruitment Policies Must Be Reviewed

02 July 2013

The IFP calls on the Minister of Police and National Police Commissioner to urgently review the recruitment policy of the SAPS.

IFP Spokesperson on Police, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu, MP, said, “It is horrific to learn that the SAPS ranks are populated with murderers, fraudsters and other criminal offenders. It is high time that SAPS tighten their screening of candidate police officers. How is the populace expected to trust our police officers who have prior criminal convictions? A crime is all the more ghastly if it is committed by someone wearing a police uniform.”

Ndlovu further stated that, “The SAPS cannot be a nest for criminal police officers to further ply their trade. There is no place for criminals in the SAPS,” concluded Ndlovu.

The National Police Commissioner must give a time frame for completion of the audit of current serving police officers with prior criminal convictions. Such Officers should be suspended with immediate effect.
