IFP Calls on MEC to Intervene in Mooi River Strike

04 June 2013

IFP Caucus Chairperson of the uMgungundlovu District Municipality, Cllr Mbongeni E Madlala, has called for an urgent intervention by MEC of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomsa Dube, to resolve the municipal workers strike at Mooi Mpofana (Mooi River).

Cllr Madlala said, "This strike has been on-going for the last three weeks with no end in sight and it appears that the Municipality is unable and unwilling to address the issues raised by the striking workers.  Major issues raised by workers are that the Municipality does not provide petrol for refuse trucks, resulting in refuse not being collected, but the workers being blamed.  Another matter is the allegation that proper employment procedures are not followed in the recruitment of municipal staff."

"Service delivery is being seriously affected and it has now reached the stage where all residents are feeling the bite of this strike.  We cannot let this continue and as the IFP uMgungundlovu Caucus we believe that if it were any other IFP-led municipality, intervention by the MEC would have been swift and the Municipality could even have been placed under administration.

We call on MEC Dube to place her Ministerial duties above political interests and to bring the Mooi River Municipality's house to order," Cllr Madlala concluded.
