IFPYB Welcomes the Arrest of Andile Lungisa

04 October 2013

The IFP Youth Brigade welcomes the arrest of former NYDA Board Chairperson and President of the Pan African Youth Union (PYU), Mr Andile Lungisa on allegations of defrauding the Department of Arts & Culture of R2.5 million.

Corruption is sweeping through this country like a wild fire. Every effort should be made to bring those involved in acts of corruption to book. The high levels of poverty and inequality are exacerbated by public money going into private pockets.

We congratulate the Hawks for working tirelessly around the clock to curb the curse of corruption.

It is our expectation that the investigation of the Hawks will extend beyond what has been reported and look into the financial history of the NYDA under Mr Lungisa’s tenure as board chairperson.

In 2011 the IFPYB lodged a complaint with the Public Protector to investigate the now infamous R100 million 2010 youth festival extravaganza whilst Mr Lungisa was chairperson. The Public Protector is yet to conclude her investigation.

There is an evident nexus between the suspension of the NYDA CEO, Mr Steven Ngubeni, and the activities of Mr Lungisa considering the contents of the NYDA 2012/13 financial report; it would therefore be a travesty of justice if this was not investigated as well.

Clearly the Hawks and the Public Protector have their work cut out for them. South Africa should stop breeding corruption and pursue prosperity.
