IFP Welcomes SABC Board Resignations

11 March 2013

The IFP has taken note this morning of the reported resignations of Mr Ben Ngubane, Chairperson of the SABC Board and his Deputy, Mr Thami ka Plaatjie.

IFP Spokesperson on Communications, Ms Liezl van der Merwe MP said, "Tasked with steering the SABC Board and the organisation at large to stability and good governance, Mr Ngubane and Mr ka Plaatjie failed while at the helm of the Board. It is clear that in the midst of an ever-growing crisis at the public broadcaster, these men have shown real leadership by taking responsibility for the crisis."

Van der Merwe stated that, "Their resignations will only serve to further destabilise the SABC. It is therefore imperative that Parliament meets as a matter of urgency to discuss the way forward."

At this stage, the IFP is of the opinion that there is no need for the Board to be dissolved and that capable, passionate individuals must be found to take the public broadcaster forward. We will need individuals who will put the interests and the stability of the public broadcaster first.

The IFP also believes that it is of utmost importance that all future appointments to the SABC board are depoliticized.
