IFP Condemns Assault of Train Passenger by Security Guard

11 April 2013

The IFP condemns the recent violent assault of a passenger on a Metrorail train by a Metrorail security guard at Kraaifontein station in the Western Cape.

IFP Spokesperson on Transport, Mr Petros Sithole MP said, "This is complete abuse of power. People who are supposed to uphold law and order should not feel that they have power to treat other citizens in such a brutal manner.

This is becoming an increasing phenomenon in our country and it must be stopped. People should feel safe around security guards and police. Security guards should follow security protocols in reprimanding people instead of immediately resorting to unprovoked violence."

Sithole continued, "We urge Metrorail to investigate and address these unacceptable behavioural patterns that seem to be developing within their security ranks. We also hope that Metrorail will proceed with the strictest disciplinary measures against the implicated security guard."
