Stricter Security Needed at Social Grant Paypoints

12 April 2013

"The brazen shootout and senseless killing at a social grant paypoint once again highlights the audacity of criminals who have no respect for law and order. It is also a clear call for improved security measures when grants are being paid," said Honourable Les Govender, Shadow MEC for Social Development.

Honourable Govender’s comment follows a shooting that took place in Lindelani, KwaMashu early this morning, where three people were killed and others wounded in an attempted robbery.

The IFP condemns any form of violence especially when aimed at those who are vulnerable and unable to defend themselves. The IFP calls on the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the Department of Community Safety & Liaison to work together in making sure that all pension payout points are protected and safe.

“The IFP extend deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish for a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries. It is unacceptable that families and communities are devastated by criminals,” said Honourable Govender.
