Shunned by Doctors, a KwaMashu Woman Gives Birth On the Street

12 June 2013

The Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaZulu- Natal has expressed shock at the incident which occurred at KwaMashu’s Poly Clinic, which led to a patient giving birth on her way home after she was chased away by healthcare workers at the clinic.

“We are gravely concerned about the increasing negligence by our healthcare workers. It is a disgrace for the department that the woman (only known as Thandeka) went into labour after being chased away by nurses and doctors at the clinic, which led to the death of her baby. Such an incident could have been prevented, however our healthcare workers have lost the Batho Pele spirit,” said Hon. Ncamsile Nkwanyana, Shadow MEC for Health.

The IFP is urging the MEC for Health, Dr Sbongiseni Dhlomo to intervene immediately. The IFP is also appalled to discover that the family of the victim has been threatened by the Clinic staff.

“Heads must roll; this is totally unacceptable. All responsible for this must be held accountable; this type of behaviour is the reason why the department is being sued left, right and centre; it’s because our nurses and doctors think they are above all, they abuse their power and miss the spirit of Ubuntu in the workplace,” said Hon. Nkanywana.
