IFP Supports Initiative to Fight Child Sex Tourism

16 May 2013

The IFP supports the initiative by Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa to mobilise South African hotels to help protect children from sex tourism, by committing to be on the lookout for suspicious guests who check-in with underage companions.

IFP Spokesperson on Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms Liezl van der Merwe MP, said, "This is a good initiative by Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa to protect our children from being exploited by people visiting our country. Unfortunately, child prostitution is on the increase in South Africa. We commend our hotels for their cooperation in reporting suspicious incidents, not only involving tourists, but anyone they suspect is exploiting a child companion."

Van der Merwe continued, "We hope to see this initiative dramatically decrease the incidence of child prostitution, rape and human trafficking. These things should be seen and dealt with as a crisis. We are pleased to see NGOs standing up for our children."
