ANC Councillor Strips off more than 200 RDP Homes to Sell Building Material for Personal Gain

18 April 2013

The Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaZulu Natal is alarmed by findings that the Ward 2 Councillor, at Riverside in UMzimkhulu Municipal area has stripped off more than 200 RDP homes in order to sell the goods to the community for personal gain.

It is alleged that Councillor Mbhele has sold government property to the community that is supposed to be benefiting from the programme. Other allegations that have risen are that Councillor Mbhele has been keeping stacks of corrugated iron with the Local Induna to build another community hall and Church that the community is not aware of.

“This type of behaviour is nothing but an act of greed and misleading the community. People should not have to buy building material to build their own RDP homes or what is rightfully theirs,” said Honourable Inkosi Ngamezizwe Madlala.

The IFP condemns such behaviour and is calling for heads to roll in sorting out Councillors who use community’s vulnerability to feed their greed for money.  The IFP has also discovered that the matter had been reported to the municipality by some community members, however ANC Municipal Officials in UMzimkhulu have ignored these complaints.

“Since Municipal Officials have chosen to sweep the matter under the carpet maybe it’s time for the MEC to act and make sure that Community needs are not compromised by greedy Councillors and Officials,” said Honourable Inkosi Madlala.
