IFP to Attend KwaShobashobane Commemoration

20 December 2013

The IFP has welcomed KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu’s invitation to attend the “Unveiling of the Tombstones and Memorial Wall for the Victims of Shobashobane Massacre,” scheduled for Tuesday, 24 December 2013 at Ezinqoleni Sports Ground. However the party expressed concerns that these commemorations appear to be sectarian in that they are focussed on victims of one political party, the ANC. IFP Leader in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Blessed Gwala said:

“As the IFP we warmly welcome the invitation from KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Mr Senzo Mchunu, who invited all MPL’s to attend the “Unveiling of the Tombstones and Memorial Wall for the Victims of Shobashobane Massacre.” This commemoration comes at a time when the whole country is still celebrating the legacy of one of the foremost leaders of our struggle, Dr Nelson Mandela who left us last week. As we know Dr Mandela was championing peace and reconciliation among different communities and sectors in South Africa. It is within this spirit and in efforts to uphold this legacy, which our President Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi shared with Dr Mandela, that we will approach the Shobashobane event.

“However we are disturbed that these commemorations seem focussed only on ANC-aligned communities whereas the wounds inflicted by apartheid and by the low-intensity-civil war spared almost no community across the political spectrum. In fact we have raised this issue among those which we have written to the current Premier about, which are issues still outstanding between the IFP and the ANC. We hope that the Premier Mchunu, unlike his predecessor, will find time in his busy schedule to respond to the letter we have forwarded to his office so that both organisations will be able to take the unfinished business forward.”
