Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipal Mayor in Limpopo Must Resign

21 May 2013

The IFP calls on the Mayor of the Lepelle-Nkumpi municipality in Limpopo, Ivy Phaahla, to resign after she spent R14 000 of taxpayers' money attending the ANC's 101st anniversary celebration in Durban in January.

IFP Spokesperson on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Peter Smith, MP, said, "It's incredible that despite the fact that people are always complaining about lack of service delivery and rampant corruption, the Mayor still insists the ANC gave her a mandate to abuse public funds. The ANC must be held accountable for this."

Smith further said, "The Mayor violates the provision of the municipal public office-bearers' handbook, which states that "Councillors and their families are not entitled to domestic or international flights for private use at municipal expense."

The IFP calls on the MEC for Co-operative Governance as well as the ANC Provincial leadership to urgently fire this mayor.
