Toxic Chemical Dumping Tragedy Must Be Investigated

24 April 2013

The IFP is deeply distressed by the unwarranted death of 3-year-old Jordan Lewis from Delft, Western Cape who died after being exposed to toxic chemicals that were illegally dumped near her home. IFP Spokesperson on Environmental Affairs, Mrs Connie Zikalala, MP said, "It is very sad to hear of Jordan's death. Criminal and civil action should be pursued against the company as well as the representatives of the company who ordered such dumping."

Zikalala continued, "We urge the provincial and national environmental authorities to investigate quickly and find the company responsible."

The IFP urges the MEC of Water and Environmental Affairs in the Western Cape to tackle the issue of the 958 illegal dumping hot spots around the Western Cape and ensure that dumping in those spots is stopped immediately.
