Guidelines for Municipal Salaries Must Be Implemented

25 June 2013

The IFP calls on the Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs to urgently implement national and provincial guidelines on municipal salaries.

IFP Spokesperson on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Peter Smith, MP said, "I have noted that some Municipal Managers in the Western Cape Municipalities are earning higher salaries than the Western Cape Premier."

Although the IFP is not against promoting good governance by ensuring that municipalities pay higher packages to senior managers, it believes that this needs to be regulated as this could open a door to corruption.

The IFP will submit a parliamentary question to the Minister of Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs to ascertain whether any intervention has been made regulating the current high salaries paid to municipal managers.

In addition, we suggest that municipal managers of municipalities who receive qualified audits do not receive bonuses or salary increases.
