Housing Backlog At Ekurhuleni

27 February 2013

The IFP is concerned about the housing backlog in the Ekurhuleni municipality, with some houses still incomplete in the Villa Lisa area.

IFP Spokesperson on Human Settlements, Mr Petros Sithole said, "I visited the Villa Lisa area on Sunday and discovered that RDP houses that were being built in 2007 are still incomplete. Only 33 homes have been fully built and even these residences are dilapidated and will require rectification in the near future due to extremely poor workmanship."

No formal housing allocation has yet been done in this area. The IFP also learnt that the last time Ekurhuleni residents were supplied with housing was during the tenure of the late Councillor Caiphus Sambo who was the Member of the Mayoral Committee, and the former Mayor of Ekurhuleni Duma Nkosi.

Sithole further stated that, "As the IFP we strongly believe that the Gauteng  Provincial Department of Human Settlements must be investigated in order to determine why money was spent on a housing project with no identified beneficiaries and why these houses remain unfinished. Those in charge must be brought to account as their inaction has ensured that our people still live in shacks."

The IFP calls upon the Special Investigations Unit, the Ekurhuleni Metro Council and the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements to urgently release the 2006 corruption report, which has been suppressed. The perpetrators identified in the report must be brought to book and housing delivery sped up.
