KZN Transport MEC Must Intervene in Ballito Taxi Violence

27 March 2013

The IFP calls on the MEC for Transport in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Mr Willies Mchunu to urgently help end the taxi violence in Ballito.

IFP Spokesperson on Transport, Mr Petros Sithole MP said, "The argument involving routes between KwaDukuza and the Dolphin Coast Taxi Associations needs urgent intervention. KwaZulu-Natal has been a battlefield, with many people in Mpumalanga Township losing their lives last year when fighting erupted between two rival taxi associations."

The IFP wants dialogue between the affected taxi associations to be called by the MEC.

"The MEC must also deploy the Provincial Taxi Violence Task Team in Ballito to find and iron out the problems that exist. The issue of the Ballito taxi rank has been on the agenda for four and a half years, but no agreement has been made up until today," said Sithole.

The KwaDukuza Taxi Association and Dolphin Coast Taxi Association need to settle this matter urgently. With the Easter weekend coming up, the lives of passengers should be of paramount importance because they are reliant on public transport.
