IFP DEMANDS TRUTH ABOUT UNIZUL VIOLENCE

November 2, 2005

The IFP remains deeply concerned about the recent outbreak of violence at the University of Zululand. The party will demand clarity on the causes of violence from everyone concerned.

"As much as we welcome the fact that the university is re-opening today, we remain deeply concerned about the causes of the student unrest which was allegedly triggered by the university's rejection of the SRC election results that had seen the SADESMO candidates win all the seats," said Alfred Mpontshane MP, who chairs the party's education study group at the National Assembly, Cape Town.

"The IFP deplores any form of political intolerance. We intend to see the Minister of Education as well as everyone else concerned to clarify the conflicting information about the events that led to the student unrest. We want the culprit(s) to take the full responsibility for the damages to the morale and the property of the university," said Mpontshane.
