IFP Calls For Immediate Legal Action Against Ceramic
Companies Involved In Illegal Dumping In Hammanskraal

03 May 2013

The IFP calls on the National Prosecuting Authority for urgent legal action against certain ceramic companies, known to be the biggest culprits in illegal dumping in Bosplaas, an extension of Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria.

IFP Spokesperson on Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Connie Zikalala, MP, said "The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs, the Moretele Municipality and the Gauteng Provincial Government are aware of the serious problem of illegal dumping in this area, yet seem to be doing nothing about it. Two children have already died because of illegal dumping of toxic chemicals and no legal action has been taken against the companies involved."

"On numerous occasions I have raised the issue of illegal dumping in the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Water and Environmental Affairs but it continues to fall on deaf ears. The Minister herself knows about this issue, but is not doing enough to eradicate it. The Department is failing the people of Bosplaas."

The IFP calls on the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs and the Moretele Municipality to urgently intervene by taking legal action against all the companies involved in this very dangerous form of illegal dumping. The Green Scorpions should also be deployed to the affected area to assist with the investigation.
