The Department of Social Development Must Root Out
Fraud and Corruption in All SASSA Offices

4 March 2013

The IFP supports the raids currently being conducted by the Department of Social Development in the South African Social Security Agency offices (Sassa) in Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal. The Department should conduct the raids on all Sassa offices across the country as they are clearly breeding grounds for corruption.

All Sassa officials found guilty of committing fraud and theft of monies should be fired and arrested. Beneficiaries who are found to be benefiting fraudulently from grants should also be stripped of their grant allowance and arrested.

It is shocking to learn that R2.7 million was stolen by a fraud syndicate in just 6 months! That money could have been used to benefit thousands of legitimate grant beneficiaries. It's also appalling to hear that Sassa officials even steal the machines that produce Sassa cards! Sassa should have high security in their offices and the Department should come up with a workable security strategy to prevent fraud from being conducted by its officials.

Corruption must be rooted out in all government offices.
