POLICE MAKING HEADWAY IN NONGOMA

Durban: February 9, 2005

The IFP's KwaZulu-Natal Spokesperson, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu, MP, commended the police today for making headway in solving the murder of IFP activist Ndabazempi Elliot "Stende" Mbatha.

Mr Ndlovu said,

"Stende Mbatha was shot and killed in Nongoma on January 29, 2005. Today we received information that seven people were arrested in the area in connection with the murder. An arsenal of weapons was also seized, including one AK-47, one pump gun, one 9mm pistol, one .38 revolver and a shot gun."

"We are now awaiting the justice system to take its course and we hope that this is the first step towards bringing peace and stability to the Nongoma area where we have in the past shown that there is deliberate political destablising of the area."

"Most telling of these arrests is that those arrested are known to be part of the ANC's activities in the area. This breakthrough by the police should be allowed to continue and we urge the police to follow-up on these arrests by uncovering the network of murderers who have ravaged the area for the past few years."

"We also call on those who are hell bent on control no matter what the cost to see the light of our new democracy and focus on democracy not demagogy."
