Contractors Assigned to Build Medupi Must Be Held to Account

10 July 2013

The IFP calls on the Minister of Public Enterprises, Malusi Gigaba to ensure that harsh penalties are exacted from the contractors who won tenders to build Medupi Power station.

IFP Spokesperson on Public Enterprises, Mr Petros Sithole,MP, said, "These contractors failed to perform in terms of their mandates. Now the deadline for the completion of Medupi power station has been delayed by 6 months. This has resulted in a direct increase in costs as against the original amount. These price increases must be subtracted from the original tender costs."

Sithole added, "The Minister of Public Enterprise must be hands-on in this matter. He promised that by December, the Medupi Power station would be completed. There are still many people without electricity and it is therefore imperative that the Minister ensure that there are no further delays with the construction work."

The IFP calls on Eskom to work closely with the Minister in making sure that these contractors are held accountable.
