The IFP calls on the Minister of Health, Dr
Aaron Motsoaledi, to urgently implement a turnaround strategy
for the rolling-out of National Health Insurance (NHI) pilot
projects, which are currently a total disaster.
IFP Spokesperson on Health, Mrs Hilda Msweli,
MP, said "There are many problems currently with the NHI pilot
projects. Proper planning regarding the allocation of grants is
non-existent and there is little or no oversight on spending. If
the Minister does not rectify this situation immediately the NHI
will be a total failure once again at the expense of the South
Africa tax payer,"
Provincial NHI Co-ordinators appointed to
monitor the NHI pilot projects must perform their allotted
duties and be held accountable for any non-performance.
Msweli further stated that "The Minister must
also institute an investigation into the delays by contractors
in completing projects, which has led to further costs being
incurred. Furthermore, under-spending of grants, incorrect
allocation of budgets and poor performance in some of the pilot
regions needs to be investigated. Corruption is rife and must
also be rooted out at the source in these projects,"
The IFP will submit written questions to the
Minister of Health asking the Department to explain exactly how
they will go about addressing the current dire challenges facing
NHI pilot projects.
