IFP Rejects Khiphinkunzi Maskandi Festival

10 December 2014.

The IFP has rejected the KwaZulu-Natal Government Khiphinkunzi Maskandi Festival that is scheduled for Princess Magogo Stadium tomorrow.

The party says it cannot be dragooned into a festival which was organised without its knowledge and involvement. Secondly the IFP complained that the KwaZulu-Natal Government is undermining the work of the Legislature by deciding to convene what the party called side-shows while the Legislature is in session.

The party said this as it reacted to the invitation sent to the KwaZulu-Natal Multi-Party Political Intervention Committee inviting them to a meeting of the KwaZulu-Natal Council Against Crime Launch to be held at L-Section Hall KwaMashu on Thursday, the 11th of December 2014 at 8:00 am and later to the Khuzimpi Maskandi Festival Against crime to be held at Princess Magogo Stadium, KwaMashu immediately after the launch.

"We totally distance ourselves from the Khiphinkunzi Maskandi Festival which does not seem to be a genuine campaign to fight crime. We were not party to the organisation of the whole event. We cannot therefore be dragooned to participate in something that we do not know," said IFP leader in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala, MPL.

"What is worse is that the ANC-led KwaZulu-Natal government decided to organise this Festival in the midst of a Legislature Sitting. This obviously means that they do not take the work of the Legislature seriously. The issues of crime are very serious. Therefore how can leaders who respect the Legislature decide to call such an important meeting when the Legislature is in session, while knowing very well that some members of the Multi-Party Committee are MPLs who are expected to be inside the Legislature debating matters of life-and-death which are as important as crime? Why did they not call this meeting on a day when the Legislature is not in session?" continued Mr Gwala.

"That the KwaZulu-Natal Cabinet does not care much about the Legislature is in fact evident in that most of the time they are absent from the Sittings. As the IFP we shall not cooperate with efforts which seek to undermine the Legislature." concluded Mr Gwala.
