On the Passing of the Hon. Mr Ben Skosana MP

Statement by
Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP
President of the Inkatha Freedom Party

11 February 2014

It is with great sadness that I announce the sudden and unexpected passing of the Hon. Mr Ben Skosana MP this evening. The Hon. Mr Skosana served as House Chairperson of the National Assembly and was a senior member of the IFP, having been one of our longest serving members.

He served his nation with dedication, integrity and skill. His contribution in the field of international relations and cooperation, as well as his leadership as Minister of Correctional Services, will be remembered in years to come as a model of exemplary service.

His passing is a loss to our Party, to our Parliament and our country. It is a loss to me personally, for Mr Skosana was a friend with whom I shared many of my career's tribulations and victories. We worked side by side for several decades to shape our country on the best democratic principles.

His wisdom and vast experience have served us well. It will not be easy to bid farewell to this stalwart friend and colleague. It is left to us to honour his memory and remember the remarkable body of work he contributed to both the liberation and democratic maturity of South Africa.

Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. We offer our condolences. To Mr Ben Skosana, we express even now our heartfelt thanks.

May he rest in the peace he so richly deserves.
