MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE
INKATHA FREEDOM PARTY

Expectations From State of the Nation Speech

12 February 2014

The Inkatha Freedom Party expects decisive and immediate action from President Zuma in a few areas.

IFP Chief Whip JH van der Merwe (MP) said “Key areas which we expect the President to address include:

(1) Leadership: The President’s poor leadership has led to a myriad of undesirable effects, including cronyism and corruption, which are rotting our public service system.

(2) Unemployment remains rife, with many South Africans being left in a state of utter hopelessness and despair.

(3) Education is sub-standard, with an ever widening gap between what is being taught in our schools and ‘real world’ requirements for gainful employment.

(4) Infrastructure development and maintenance are core features to our economic recovery and to this end we wish to see real impetus being placed behind the National Development Plan and not just mere ‘lip service’ being paid thereto.

(5) Service delivery must be addressed. Our people cannot continually resort to protesting while the government ignores them and their needs.

Van der Merwe further stated that the IFP would also like the President to come clean over the Nkandla debacle and to tell the nation the truth about his role in the spending of over R200 million on his personal residence.
