ANC FOMENTS VIOLENCE IN HLABISA

Durban: January 13, 2005

The ANC has brought Hlabisa to the brink of violence when it sabotaged a R76m government project launched by Deputy President Jacob Zuma.

The ANC influence on the project's steering committee is blocking the employment of as many as 80 people, who, the ANC MEC at Mkhanyakude District Municipality and an unwelcome force behind the committee, Simo Mhlongo, believes, have links to the IFP.

"This is quite rich coming from someone who is tampering with the decisions of a steering committee which is supposed to be a no-go-zone for political parties and influences, and who is so openly affiliated to the ANC," said local IFP MPP, Inkosi Bonga Mdletshe.

Inkosi Mdletshe also said:

"The ANC clearly feels that the Hlabisa region has experienced a long period of peace and that this needs to be changed. The ANC preaches reconciliation but, in the same breath, creates hostility and foments violence."

"As a result of the ruling party's hypocrisy, the people of Hlabisa will have to wait endlessly to reap the benefits of this development and welfare project. The ultimate losers in such pointless wars are the rural poor."
