Action Must Be Taken on Harry Gwala Stadium Disaster

14th August 2014.

The IFP has called on the KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Senzo Mchunu, to ensure that swift action is taken against officials implicated in the Commission of Enquiry Report on the Harry Gwala Stadium disaster of December 2012. The party said this in a statement issued in reaction to the report delivered by Premier Mchunu in the Legislature yesterday.

In his report Mchunu told the Legislature that the Commission of Enquiry had found that the department had not followed its own regulations in relation to the carrying out of fitness tests on that fateful day. In addition, the Commission recommended compensation to the families of the victims as well as disciplinary procedures to be undertaken against four Transport Department officials implicated as well as that there must be investigations against some officials for submitting fraudulent minutes of a meeting to the commission.

In its statement the IFP said: “We are grateful and relieved that finally the long-awaited report on the December 2102 Harry Gwala disaster has been completed and released. And as we also suspected, the Commission has indeed found that the deaths resulted from some in the Department of Transport flouting the rules.”

“As a party we urge the Premier to ensure that swift action is taken against the officials implicated in the report and that all other recommendations are implemented without delay. We will also keep a close eye to see if indeed steps are being taken.”

“While we know that these steps may not be commensurate with the losses suffered by the families, we are hopeful that they will help bring about some finality, closure and relief.”
