The on-going community protest in
Thandukukhanyatownship in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga shows that
national government intervention is urgently required.
IFP Spokesperson on Co-operative Government
and Traditional Affairs, Mr Peter Smith, MP, said "During the
protest in Zamdela, the Minister of Co-operative Governance
intervened and now he should intervene once more, failing which
this matter will not be resolved. Residents are protesting over
poor basic service delivery from Mkhondo Municipality which they
say has prevailed for more than three years now without redress
or intervention from the Mpumalanga Provincial Government."
"This begs the question of what the MEC for
Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Simon
Skhosana is doing to make Mkhondo Municipality accountable for
failing to deliver services to the people. Municipal Management
who fail in the performance of their allotted duties must vacate
their positions and competent individuals must be
appointed," said Smith.
The IFP calls on the NCOP and Mpumalanga
Premier to urgently intervene in addressing the failure of
service delivery to residents in the Mkhondo Municipal area. We
further feel that Mkhondo Municipality should be
placed immediately under administration.
