Salaries for SAPS Members Must Be Increased

15th August 2014.

The IFP in KwaZulu Natal Legislature raised grave concerns about the salaries paid to police personnel.

Delivering his Budget Vote Debate yesterday in the Legislature, IFP Leader in the Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala, MPL, said; “We are of the view that police personnel are grossly underpaid in view of the often dangerous work that they do. They are called upon to uphold the law and protect law abiding citizens from dangerous criminals.

"The salary that they receive is not in keeping with the nature of their work. The IFP has raised this issue several times in the Legislature but is of the view that not much improvement has been made. We strongly believe that underpayment of police officers could be a major contributing factor to high number of police officers committing crime.”

“Better remuneration and working conditions will also attract more young people to become police officers and will go a long way in retaining the services of dedicated and experienced police personnel.” concluded Gwala.
