IFP CELEBRATES MAPHUMULO BY-ELECTION VICTORY

Durban: February 18, 2005

The IFP today celebrated it overwhelming victory in the Maphumulo Ward 2 by-election held on 16 February 2005 where the IFP's candidate Nonhlanhla Samukelisiwe Ndlovu won with 1619 votes against the ANC candidate's 187 votes.

The IFP's KwaZulu-Natal Spokesperson, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu, commented:

"This overwhelming victory in a by-election forced by the previous councillor's attempt to cross the floor and not obtaining the required 10% threshold is a clear indication that the electorate's wish lay with the Party and not with the intent of the previous councillor."

"This electoral victory shows the mockery of the crossing-of-the-floor where those elected can willy nilly attempt to change their political affiliation without considering the people who elected them in the first place."

"We thank the people on Maphumulo Ward 2 for their commitment and support of the IFP and we also congratulate Councillor Ndlovu on her electoral victory," Mr Ndlovu concluded.
