Minister Must Address Malpractice Lawsuits

19 June 2013

The IFP calls on the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, to urgently address the high rate of medical malpractice lawsuits.

IFP Spokesperson on Health, Mrs Hilda Msweli, MP, said, "The Eastern Cape Health Department is being sued for R8 million by a man who has spent three years with two surgical instruments inside his body. This shows that there is a dire need for urgent intervention from national government. The increased number of claims for medical negligence is crippling the state of millions of rands, which could have been used in improving the healthcare systems in our rural communities. This must be urgently addressed."

Msweli further stated, "We attribute this increase to a lack of leadership in hospital management. There is currently little or no oversight on doctors and interns. We also call for immediate intervention in the provision of health leadership and management training to all public hospitals management. There is also a dire need for improvement in strategic support, and other operational issues at our hospitals," concluded Msweli.
