Correctional Services Failing to Resolve Westville Crisis

22 April 2013

The increase in the number of reported cases of instability in the Westville prison is a clear indication that the department of Correctional Services is failing to address the crisis in this correctional centre.

IFP Spokesperson on Correctional Services, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu MP said, "The recent brutal attacks on some of the prisoners by the Stability Unit need to be investigated. Members of this unit involved in such behaviour must be suspended immediately pending a full investigation and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if they attacked prisoners."

The IFP is reiterating its call that the Minister of Correctional Services must intervene in helping resolve problems in the Westville Prison, in order to stabilise this situation. "This is not the first time that prisoners are complaining about their treatment at Westville. We are told that numerous investigations have taken place in the past but that to date no prosecutions have occurred," concluded Ndlovu.

The IFP calls on the Minister of Correctional Services to urgently address the issues in Westville prison as the KZN provincial authorities seem to be failing or unwilling to do so.
