IFP Welcomes the Establishment of the Public Budget Office

26 February 2013

IFP Spokesperson on Appropriations, Narend Singh MP welcomes the media launch on the establishment of the Public Budget Office. He said, "It is long overdue since the Act which established the office was passed in April 2009. However, the progress that has been made since then is noted."

The IFP urges the authorities to appoint the director and support staff to this office within the next 3 months.

Singh further said, "Whilst we accept that initially the office would provide support to the appropriations committee both in the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces, eventually this office should serve as a financial technical resource centre to all members of parliament and civil society."

He further reiterated, "The choice of director and staff must be based purely on meritocracy and not be political motivated in any way. The public budget office can serve a very useful purpose in providing expertise to Members of Parliament in their oversight roles over the use of public finances."
