Task Team Must Investigate Malfunctioning
of Laundry Machines At Hlabisa Hospital

26th August 2014.

The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal Legislature calls on Health MEC, Dr Sbongiseni Dhlomo, to urgently appoint a task team to investigate claims that Hlabisa Hospital is drying hospital laundry outdoors due to broken laundry machines.

"We are very concerned that the Department of Health has neglected laundry services at provincial hospitals. If the MEC is serious about his Departmentís turnaround strategy he should prioritise this matter, as the cleanliness of a hospital is a matter of life and death. The MEC must appoint a new company to take over from the current one, which has failed dismally to make sure that laundry machines are working properly. It has been a year since some machines have been broken but nothing has been done to repair them," said IFP Spokesperson on Health, Mrs Ncamisile Nkwanyana, MPL.

"The hospital has several laundry machines, but only three are working properly which has resulted in them being unable to cope with the bulk of hospital laundry. The MEC must intervene urgently," continued Mrs Nkwanyana.

"The MEC must ensure that broken equipment is repaired and better systems for laundry management logistics must be put in place. In addition, he must conduct an audit to determine how many hospitals are in a similar position like Hlabisa Hospital," concluded Mrs Nkwanyana.
