"The government's inability to deal with the
grievances of KwaZulu-Natal residents has fuelled residents'
fury and violent service delivery protests are escalating out of
control. The situation in Mooi River is indicative of the way in
which the ANC government operates. Government is failing to
address the root causes of service delivery protests," said IFP
Leader in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala, MPL.
"Government should react swiftly and
investigate the concerns of the people of Mooi River because it
is clear that there have been many failures, especially at
municipality level. Community frustration is caused by the
absence of government’s will to address the concerns of the
people,” said Mr Gwala.
“The death of a woman in Ozwathini, who fell
from a cliff while trying to get water, is yet another example
of the government’s failure to provide basic services such as
water to the people. We reiterate our call for an urgent debate
regarding unreliable water supply in the province as many
residents still have no access to clean water," Gwala continued.
"The IFP questions whether residents are
getting the services they have been promised in terms of the
budgets that are made available to the municipality. We call on
the MEC to ensure that deadlines for delivery of services
should be outlined and residents should be informed
accordingly," concluded Gwala.
