IFP Welcomes Agreement to Save McCord Hospital in Durban

27th September 2013

The IFP has welcomed the agreement between the McCord Hospital and KwaZulu Natal Government to ensure that the hospital remains operational.

IFP Spokesperson on Health, Mrs Hilda Msweli, MP said, “It is vital that the hospital stays open as it services many of Durban’s poor and indigent. Its closure would not only leave many staff unemployed but would also greatly hinder medical service delivery in the area and place undue pressure on the area’s other medical facilities.”

McCord has been serving the community of Durban for 104 years and has been at the forefront of the treatment of HIV/Aids.

Msweli further stated, “We welcome the appointment of a joint technical team to oversee the operations process at the hospital and suggest that any challenges that may arise be reported immediately to the KZN MEC for Health so that such challenges can be attended to as a matter of urgency.”

The IFP calls on the KwaZulu Natal Government to further consider the re-opening of Pongola hospital as its closure has left a gaping hole in medical service delivery to the residents of Pongola.
