MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE
INKATHA FREEDOM PARTY

SA Rhino Poaching Measures Have Failed

31 March 2014.

The Inkatha Freedom Party is horrified by the year-on-year increase in the numbers of Rhino being poached on South African soil. To date in 2014, this number stands at 237 Rhino.

IFP MP on the environment, Ms CN Zikalala said, "I am aghast at the figures of rhino killed since 2008. There has been a steady increase in the killings which clearly indicates that the Minister and Department of Environment are losing this battle; more must be done."

The Inkatha Freedom Party calls for stringent legislation, tougher criminal sanction for those found guilty of poaching and the illicit trade in rhino horn, more feet on the ground in our wildlife parks and greater social awareness campaigns in our schools and communities."

"We also call upon Minister Molewa to vociferously engage her international counterparts in closing the illicit trade channels for rhino horn."

"Finally, we salute all those champions of South African Wildlife, our unsung heroes, the rangers, the animal rights activists and NGOs who tirelessly continue the fight to eradicate the scourge of rhino poaching from our soil".
