National Assembly: Cape Town, 24 November 2011
On Monday South Africa will assume the role of
global guardian in the arena of climate change when we host the
17th Conference of Parties.
Honourable Speaker, the road to Durban has
been one fraught with difficulties and carries with it the many
skeletons of past protocols, accords and agreements on climate
change. The cliché "talk is cheap" could possibly carry popular
sentiment in respect of global progress on climate change. This
is a sentiment that must be changed.
Action, not words is what is required. The
time for broad and general consensus between governments without
any real commitment to the adaptation and mitigation of climate
change is over and it is in this vein Honourable Speaker that
the IFP urges our COP representatives to push for actionable,
global resolutions and agreements that will see our beautiful
planet pristinely preserved for our future generations.
I thank you.
